I sculpt mostly in soft clay which is fired in a kiln to a strong permanent state. The sculptures may be either painted after firing with various combinations of acrylics, watercolors, and pastels or fired a second time with a glaze.

My pieces are often figurative—busts, torsos, figures—and are sculpted either in the round or in relief. Along with continuing efforts to model the human form, I have been working recently on a series of plaque sculptures depicting faces in various reflective or spiritual moods, surrounded with imagery inspired by multicultural and even mythic ideas. I am also exploring architectural tiles, often based on ancient designs.

The human form and features are the external expression of a vast world of character, mood, and consciousness lurking inside. To be able to manifest even some of this inner world in an artwork created with my hands and such simple, ancient elements as clay and fire brings me great joy.
